Why am I serving here?

One of the ways ForColumbia strives to love and serve our neighbors is by supporting non-profit organizations that work every day to improve the lives of people in Columbia. United Community Builders is one of those organizations working powerfully every day for the good of those in our community.

UCB works to transform lives by strengthening families and supporting parents, while also providing tutoring, mentoring, and educational enrichment for children from pre‑K through middle school. The organization also offers job‑readiness training along with a variety of programs and events designed to develop character and nurture faith.

This non-profit has grown from a small location in a Providence Ave. strip mall to its new, larger location off Paris Road. This ministry is still run by a relatively small group of committed individuals, and they could use all the help they can get caring for the property that was donated to them for this effort. This is why we think your day will be well spent serving United Community Builders.

What can I expect?

Volunteers at this site will be working outside taking out an old wooden fence (~300 yd) and many associated trees, and cutting down any remaining honeysuckle,

NOTE: There is some poison ivy at this site. We anticipate that most of it will be mulched with most of the existing honeysuckle prior to April 25, as part of the pre-work at this site.  The mulched plant material will not require handling/removal.

What should I bring?

  • We encourage all volunteers to wear closed-toed shoes and long pants, as you will be working with brush all day.

  • If you have a chain saw (& associated safety gear) you yourself are experienced using, please bring it;

  • Other helpful tools include pruning saws (hand & pole); 3 lb or 4 lb sledge hammers (~14″ handle); pry bars; loppers; work gloves; 

  • If you have a truck and trailer, by chance, let your site leader know!
  • Be sure to wear your #ForColumbia T-shirt!

Can I serve here with my children?

Because we will be using chainsaws and other power tools, this is not a safe place for children to serve.
