Why are we serving here?

One rewarding way ForColumbia serves its city is by bringing Christians together to serve other churches that are actively working every day to share the gospel and bring hope into the lives of people in Columbia.

Mount Celestial Baptist Church is a faithful congregation serving our community for over 200 years. This small church still owns the original property on which its foundations were laid, a 3-acre parcel that also houses an ancestral cemetery dating back to the church’s inception in 1824.

Two years ago, we helped this church commemorate 200 years of faithfulness to the black Christian community in Columbia, by starting a multi-year effort to revitalize the original property. Their hope is not only to make this space available to their congregation for special events, but also to allow others in our community to use this historical site. We think your day will be well spent serving at Mount Celestial Baptist Church.

What can I expect?

This will be Phase III of ForColumbia’s partnership with Mount Celestial to improve this property, our final effort at this site. Volunteers will be working outside:

  • mulching a razorback trail up the steep hill of this property, to the location of many generational gravesites, so individuals can more easily visit the burial sites of their family members;
  • potentially installing handrails or benches at certain points along the trail;
  • finishing the stairs, building into the hill to get to the trail;
  • clearing brush along the sides of the property, and;
  • other projects as identified.

What can I bring?

  • Come prepared to work outside. If it’s sunny, we encourage you to consider bringing sunscreen and/or a hat.
  • We encourage all volunteers to wear closed-toed shoes and consider wearing long pants.
  • There will be a porta-potty on site; we encourage you to bring hand sanitizer.
  • Volunteers should bring work/garden gloves and a wheelbarrow.
  • Bring the following garden tools if you have them: pruners, loppers, trimmers of any kind.
  • Be sure to wear your #ForColumbia T-shirt!

Can I serve here with my children?

This is not a family-friendly site for children under 13.
