Why are we serving here?
One of the ways ForColumbia strives to love and serve our neighbors is by supporting non-profit organizations that actively work every day in the lives of people in Columbia. True North of Columbia provides a confidential emergency shelter and supportive services for individuals and families impacted by intimate partner violence, sexual violence, sex trafficking, and stalking.
The shelter offers a safe, supportive space where survivors can rest, begin healing, and access resources. When we recognize the strength and resilience it takes to seek support and to walk alongside each person as they make choices that are right for them, we send the message that they are seen, heard, and loved.
What can I expect?
Volunteers will be working indoors and outside:
- Removing old carpet tile throughout a building recently purchased by True North to expand shelter availability;
- Removing cabinetry in a kitchen area that will be renovated for other use;
- Painting an outdoor courtyard area;
- Building a new fence between properties;
- Planting and mulching multiple landscaping areas, as well as general yard clean-up, and;
- Other projects as identified.

What should I bring?
- Volunteers should bring work gloves and be prepared to work outside.
- If it’s sunny, we encourage you to bring sunscreen and/or a hat in case you are assigned to outdoor work.
- If you have any tools to use for demo – crow bar, scrapers, mallet – or common tools for yard work – rake, hand tools for planting – please let your site leader know you can bring them.
- We encourage all volunteers to wear closed-toed shoes.
- Be sure to wear your #ForColumbia T-shirt!
Can I serve here with my children?
No, this is not an appropriate site for younger children. Middle and high school students, however, can serve with their families here.
