Why are we serving here?
One of the ways ForColumbia strives to love and serve our neighbors is by serving non-profit organizations that are actively working every day in the lives of people in Columbia. The Community Garden Coalition (CGC) of Columbia and Boone County is a non-profit group that provides support, supplies, and garden plots to community gardeners, seeking especially to help lower-income individuals, the elderly, people with disabilities, children, and others who might not be able to have a garden of their own.
This year we are serving at a garden whose land is generously provided for use by the City of Columbia, behind Fire Station #7, called Stormy’s Meadow. This garden honors fallen firefighter Bruce Britt, named after his daughter, Stormy.
This garden is a multi-cultural gathering of families who want to grow food for their families, but whose efforts are being eaten by deer before gardeners have a chance to harvest. We’ve been asked to put up a fence to help gardeners reap what they sow. This is why we believe your time will be well spent serving at this location.
What can I expect?
Volunteers at this project site will be working outside in a community garden:
- Put up deer fencing in two areas protecting local gardeners’ efforts;
- Adding a compost area;
- Demo’ing an old shed and building a new one, and;
- Building a picnic table for the gardeners to rest and enjoy the view.
