Why are we serving here?

ForColumbia’s mission – to bring Christians together to love and serve our neighbors – puts us in touch with those in Columbia who may be more marginalized or even unseen: elderly individuals, those with disabilities or those struggling with financial instability. This year, we have identified a new neighborhood area – Hanover Properties – that has a largely older population, many of whom have disabilities and lack transportation as well as community.

This is a neighborhood that is 75% seniors, all of whom rent. Our goal is to identify individuals who struggle to maintain their homes, who might need help getting larger items hauled away, and to offer practical help and a caring presence. When we give our time for the benefit of others, we send the message that they are valuable.

What can I expect?

Volunteers will be serving inside and outside in this neighborhood:

  • helping residents with various cleaning or organizing needs;
  • deep cleaning the community room to prepare for summer gatherings;
  • hauling off larger items no longer needed to the dumpster provided by ForColumbia;
  • potting flowers and/or herbs for neighbors who would like a flower pot to brighten their front porch;
  • hosting a BBQ for residents for lunch, and;
  • other projects as identified.
