Why are we serving here?

One of the ways ForColumbia strives to love and serve our neighbors is by serving those non-profit organizations that are actively working every day in the lives of people in Columbia. City of Refuge is one of those organizations working with refugees and immigrants arriving in mid-Missouri to equip them with practical needs and deeper friendships they can count on as they assimilate into their new lives in the United States.

The City of Refuge recently received 30 acres of donated land, which they hope to use in multiple ways to continue welcoming refugees into our community. This includes providing a large area for community gardening, gathering for special events, and more affordable housing. This year, ForColumbia volunteers will serve on this property to help prepare it for use.

What can I expect?

ForColumbia 2024 Volunteer T-ShirtsVolunteers will be working outside:

  • building a fence around a large community garden;
  • clearing brush and cutting up trees all around the property, as well as the entrance to the property;
  • spreading gravel for the long driveway;
  • repairing a fence around a lagoon;
  • repairing and potentially painting a small shed;
  • installing an awning over the front door of an on-site home;
  • scraping and painting the front door of the home, and
  • other projects as identified.

What should I bring?

  • Be prepared to work outside. Bring sunscreen, bug spray, and a hat.
  • If you have them, bring work gloves.
  • We also encourage volunteers at this site to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.
  • Be sure to wear your #ForColumbia T-shirt!

Can I serve here with my children?

Because volunteers will be working around the lagoon and using power tools, chainsaws, etc, we do not recommend serving at this site with children younger than high school.
