Why are we serving here?

One of the ways ForColumbia strives to love and serve our neighbors is by supporting non-profit organizations that actively work every day in the lives of people in Columbia. City of Refuge is one of those organizations working with refugees and immigrants arriving in mid-Missouri to meet their practical needs and build deeper friendships they can count on as they assimilate into their new lives in the United States.

The City of Refuge has 30 acres of donated land that they are using in multiple ways to continue welcoming refugees into our community. This includes providing a large area for community gardening, gathering for special events, and more affordable housing. ForColumbia volunteers are returning to this property to continue work on this site.

What can I expect?

Volunteers at this site will be working outside at this location:

  • expanding a garden, and the surrounding fence;
  • clearing debris;
  • mulching the trail on the prayer trail;
  • replacing an awning, and;
  • other projects as identified.

What should I bring?

  • Be prepared to work outside. Bring sunscreen, bug spray, and a hat.
  • If you have them, bring work gloves.
  • We also encourage volunteers at this site to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes.
  • Be sure to wear your #ForColumbia T-shirt!

Can I serve here with my children?

Yes, this is a family-friendly site, with projects planned where kids can serve alongside their parents!
