Why are we serving here?

One of the ways ForColumbia strives to love and serve our neighbors is by serving non-profit organizations that are actively working every day in the lives of people in Columbia. The Community Garden Coalition (CGC) of Columbia and Boone County is a non-profit group that provides support, supplies, and garden plots to community gardeners, seeking especially to help lower-income individuals, the elderly, people with disabilities, children, and others who might not be able to have a garden on their own.

Volunteering is a practical way we can love and serve our neighbors in many ways. It helps them stretch their food dollars and improve nutritional intake, encouraging self-sufficiency, good exercise, and a sense of well-being to gardeners as they spend time in God’s creation. Our city benefits, too, as community gardens are often located on formerly vacant lots that become beautiful centers of community activity.

What can I expect?

ForColumbia 2024 Volunteer T-ShirtsVolunteers at this project site will be working outside in a community garden:

  • building a large fence around the perimeter of the property to keep deer, rabbits, and other animals out of the produce;
  • replacing a couple of raised bed gardens for older gardeners and;
  • other projects as identified.

What should I bring?

  • Come prepared to work outside; if sunny, we encourage you to consider bringing sunscreen and/or a hat.
  • We encourage all volunteers to wear closed-toed shoes.
  • Be sure to wear your #ForColumbia T-shirt!

Can I serve here with my children?
